Your writing has a really nice flow. It was easy to get lost in the story.

The shift from a peaceful Italian morning to the chase down cobbled streets is so abrupt, and the detail of the wet dog smell suggesting the bump was intentional adds a layer of unease - then he just vanishes in a dead-end alley.
