I really love the level of detail you've gone into with this. I especially love the hint of a past trauma in this end paragraph, it really adds effect and makes me want to read on all the more.
I think you've got some really solid characters and they all feel like they have a distinct personality which I really like.

@Frances, not at all! I think it's just the right amount! I find that too much dialogue distracts from the story (personally, anyway!) so I think you've got the balance just right for an introductory chapter!

Oh god I'm nervous now you've got high expectations haha!!

I've read your writing before though and you have an amazing gift with historical fiction, you humanize your subjects and bring them down to earth while keeping the spirit of the time period. I can't wait!
