Maybe there's no reason for why insects (or frogs) have this feature. It's not natural selection, on the contrary. Natural selection can be done by preventing the insects from factors that are meant to help them achieve the natural, divine given ability of metamorphosis.

Ancient fossils have proven that this transformative phenomenon did exist in two forms:
Ametabolous hemimetabolous, full transition.
Partial transformation.
