It was the middle of the night when all the recruits staggered into their sleeping quarters. One by one, they climbed on their beds and tried to sleep but they couldn’t because of the Serge.
Who knows what that evil doer would do next?
Alice noticed this and decided to liven up the atmosphere. “Hey guys, who admits the chicken story was funny?”
There was a chuckle. “Yeah. I admit it. Say Mark,”
“What?”
“Did you make that story up?”
There was shuffle. “Nope.”
“So you came to the military just because of that?” another asked.
“Yep.”
“You made a poor decision my friend.” Said another.
“Humph! Think what you wanna think because I made a smart move.”
“Why do you say that? There is nothing wrong with working in a chicken farm.” said Alice.
“When you are working for my dad, everything is wrong.” Mark said. “The old geezer opened the chicken farm in hopes of cashing in the market but he didn’t know the first thing about it. I was the only idiot in my family who researched on it to help him so he left all the work to me. When there was an outbreak of lice in the farm, I was the one to blame. When the bird flu season came in, I was the only idiot running around trying find a solution to it. When egg buyers complained about the quality of the eggs, I had to pay for it.”
“Really?”
“No kidding. My mother instructed him to sell all the birds and close down the farm. We lost a majority of the flock because of the bird flu anyway so there wasn’t much to sell. Then he pooled I most of his salary into a restaurant business which closed down after a year and a half, tried opening a laundromat which failed miserably and bought a shabby hotel which he spent a lot of money trying to restore. I don’t need to tell you how that ended.”
“Yikes!”
“So when he retired and announced he was starting up the poultry business, I quickly filled out the form and left home for good. Chickens or no chickens, I am not going home unless it is necessary.”
“You are the one to talk about shitty families. My father forced me to come here.”
“Really Polo?”
“I thought you liked it in the military?”
“Yeah, yeah, that was a lie.” Polo said. “You see, my dad is a military fanatic. He loves the military so much you’d think he is married to it.”
“In that case, why didn’t he enroll?” asked one.
“He did. They didn’t take him because he has flat feet.” Polo replied. “I had dreams of becoming an actor and he just crushed it by forcing me to fill my enlistment papers and kicking me out of the house saying, ‘If you don’t come back a war hero, you are not my son.’”
Alice giggled at the way Polo sound imitating his father. “Does he really sound like that?”
“No. But he does in my mind.” Polo replied.
“Well, the reason why Felix joined the military is because Felix’s family thought Felix was a psychopath.”
“What?”
“Really?”
“Yes.” Felix looked up to the celling. “Felix grew up in an orphanage where they taught Felix how to talk like this. Because of Felix’s speech, Felix was not adopted until Felix clocked eleven. But when Felix’s clocked seventeen, Felix’s family started being afraid of Felix so they shipped Felix to the military.”
All the recruits were shocked because Felix was the quiet one of the bunch.
“Please pardon Felix’s language.” He added.
“Oh it’s okay.”
“No problem.”
“We don’t care about your English as long as we understand what you are saying.” Mark added.
“Thanks. This makes Felix happy.”
“Well I joined the military to prove to my professors that high school dropouts are worth something than working in Mc Donalds.” Ranch said with a smile. “So don’t expect me to be a recruit forever.”
“I joined to stop my brothers from calling me shorty.” Kai said. “Maybe coming home in uniform will shut them up.”
“I joined the military to get the ladies.”
“Seriously Kyle?”
“Well duh. Do you know that ladies fall head over heels for men in uniform? I will be the king of harem when I become a war hero.”
“Well, I joined the military to avoid telling my parents that I am gay.”
“Really Marcel? That’s your reason?” Mark asked.
“Yep. My father is homophobic. The day my sister told him she had a girlfriend he…well…” there was a pause. “Do I need to say it?”
“Nah!”
“Don’t if it is going to bring back some bad memories.”
“Yeah.”
“Thanks. Hopefully I will advance in my military career and find a cute boyfriend while I am at it.”
“Felix noticed you and Alice were the only people in the nurse’s office when Felix and the rest fled because of the nurse’s giant needle.”
“Yeah. I am not into girls.” Marcel made himself comfortable on his bed. “I like guys like the Sergeant.”
“What?” the recruits roared.
“Shh! He is going to hear you!” Mark said.
“Yeah! I am not ready to do push ups in the night man.”
“Speaking of pushups…hey Alice why did you join the military?”
“Oh me? No one’s ever asked me that before.” She said.
“Umm, the General just asked us that the day before yesterday.” One said.
Alice bit her bottom lip and sighed. “Well, who knows Colonel Malcom?”
Some of the recruits gasped. “Colonel Malcom?”
“The famous military Colonel who was an expert in all kinds of warfare?”
“Yep!” Alice replied with a smile.
“The one who lead eleven men to take down a top tier alien organization?”
“Yep!”
“The same person who betrayed his country and planet by stealing information from the intergalactic federation, killed his whole crew and is currently on the run?”
There was a round of silence after that.
“Yeah. That’s him.”
Someone groaned. “I am not surprised. He's the reason why every boy decided to join the military.”
“And the reason why everyone is leaving.”
“Felix agrees.”
“Yeah but I don’t believe he did that.” Alice quickly said.
“Dude, it was on the news in every single continent!”
“What he stole could spell doom for mankind if it falls into the wrong hands.”
“And with tones of aliens, millions of planets and infinite galaxies, who knows what evildoer lurks in it.”
“I know, I know but I believe there is a reason why he did that.” Alice said.
“What reason? He went to the dark side!”
“Shh, quiet please!”
“Yeah but there must be a reason why and I am going to figure it out one way or another.”
The rest noticed the firmness in her voice making it clear why she joined the military.
“Well, please stop torturing us while you are at it.” a gruff voice said.
“Hmm?”
“I mean it Alice.” there was shuffle as Mark sat up in his bed. “Look, I (don’t know about them) appreciate the jokes and the butt humor but can you tone it down a little?”
“‘Tone it down?’”
“How about she shuts up for once?”
“Hey! I am trying to be nice here.” Mark said.
“Sorry bub but I am not playing nice. What’s the big idea clapping back at the Serge and making jokes all the time?”
“Yeah and some of them aren’t funny.”
“Felix found them funny.”
“Yeah, yeah, but we don’t.”
“Seriously Alice you have to stop.”
Alice turned red out of embarrassment. “I…I am sorry. I was just trying to make light out of a bad situation.”

“I was going to say that until you bone heads dropped the hammer on her.” Mark said through gritted teeth.
“And look at the bright side, at least we are making memories here.” said Marcel.
“Doing pushups every single day is not a good memory.” one said.
“Felix agrees but Felix thinks Alice’s jokes are funny.”
Alice chuckled nervously. “It’s okay. I won’t talk back at the Serge anymore. Besides, I ran out of jokes anyway.”
“Aww, really?” Polo asked.
“Yeah. From now on, I will try my best to make the best out of the bad situation in a different way.” Alice beat her chest. “I promise.”
“As long as we don’t do pushups at the end I am fine.”
“And as long as we make some good memories I am all in for it.” said another.
“Great! Now go to bed!” yelled an annoyed voice and everywhere went quiet.
“Umm, Alice?”
“Yes Marcel?”
“Were the Serge’s butt cheeks flabby or firm?”
Alice giggled. “A little flabby.”
“GO TO SLEEP YOU IDIOTS!” a voice roared and no one knew the owner of the voice until it said, “AND MY BUTT CHEEKS AREN’T FLABBY!”
Alice was shocked. “Serge?”
“GO TO SLEEP!” the rest roared earning a giggle from her.
