"Okay, so he isn't a monster to minimum wage workers, I'm failing to see how this is a bad thing," Mina says, eyebrows furrowed as she puts another spoonful of mint chocolate chip ice cream into her mouth.

"That's the thing, it isn't, but it just bothers me how perfect he so clearly thinks he is! There has to be something wrong with him, I'm telling you! Maybe he throws his gum onto the sidewalk! Or maybe he doesn't close the toilet lid after using it. Oh my god, do you think he cuts people in line?" Viola rambles, only managing to rile herself up over anything else.

"Has it ever occured to you that he might just be a good person and you hate him for no reason? And that you've exchanged, what, three words with him?" Mina muses, fixing her eyes on her roommate. "Whatever, I still think he's a jerk in disguise. No one's that cheerful all the time and it drives me insane," she huffs, crossing her arms.

Mina huffs out an airy laugh. "What? What's so funny, I wanna laugh too," Viola all but whines. "No, it's just that you think about him an awful lot for someone who claims to hate him," Mina smirks. Viola gasps in horror. "If you hated someone like I hate him you'd understand. Plus, I do not think about him at all. Only when I see him and therefore am reminded of how awful he is."

"You mean how amazing he is," Mina teases, nudging her friend with her elbow. Viola groans. "He is anything but," she insists. But she's not sure if it's true and it irritates her. "Whatever, let's just watch the movie," she sighs, turning her attention to the TV. "Aye aye, captain," Mina mocks, but falls silent for the rest of the movie. Maybe she's right, Viola thinks to herself. And maybe that's why she feels so uneasy.

If there is one thing that Alex learned in all of his three years at college, it's that functioning without caffeine is like walking without legs. Sure you could walk on your hands, but your palms would hurt before your body gets used to it. He'd usually just make coffee at home to save time and money, but he'd just landed a sweet new job and felt he could just stop by the coffee shop near campus on his way home.

The other thing he had learned, not only at college, but all the way in his life, is that smiling tends to make people's days better. More often than not, people would smile back, and maybe they'd even be relieved that someone had offered this kind gesture to them. Most people in the world appreciated smiles. So why did that barista scowl at him?

He tried to tell himself it wasn't anything personal, and that maybe the barista had just had a bad day, but she'd been sporting a smile before her eyes looked up to see him. Why would she scowl at him? He knew he wasn't ugly, and he hadn't said anything impolite to her, quite the opposite actually. He'd been polite and warm, and yet. Yet she'd looked at him like he'd done something unforgivable, like he'd punched her in the face. He just couldn't understand it.

"Hey, man we're ordering pizza, you want some?" his best friend's voice brought him out of it. "Yeah, uh, I'll have whatever. I'll just eat anything leftover, don't even worry about it," he answered, eyes glued to the to-go cup in his hands. His name was written sharply on the cup with a black marker. He frowned at the angular edges, though he wasn't sure why he did.

"You know as well as I do that there will be none left over for you to eat, I'll just get you a pepperoni pizza then," Drew- previously mentioned best friend- informed him, stepping out of the living room into the kitchen to make the order.

He kept replaying the interaction in the coffee shop in his head over and over again. He'd done nothing wrong. It couldn't be personal, right? Why was he so bothered about this? He set his cup down on the coffee table and brought his hand to his face. He hadn't gotten a proper view of the nametag on the apron the barista was wearing, so he wasn't even sure of her name. But she seemed familiar, he just couldn't put his finger on it. Should he go there again? What would he even do if he did? He let out a sigh. There was no use in mulling it over. He'd just have to brush it off and forget about it. But it nagged at him nonetheless.

Drew returned to the living room with two cans of coke and his brows furrowed. "So, what's wrong? You've looked like you swallowed a frog since you walked in, so either you ate some frogs or something's wrong," he said, handing over the other can to his friend. "Just a rough day I guess. Barista at the coffee shop near campus looked at me like I killed her dog when I walked in. It was weird, that's all. Now that I'm saying this outloud it seems so dramatic though," he answered, opening his can and taking a sip. The liquid bubbled in his mouth and felt cooling as it went down his throat.

He heard his best friend sigh. "Alex, you've got to learn how to not be such a people pleaser, I guarantee you it almost certainly had nothing to do with you. Maybe she just had a really annoying customer just before you and was still annoyed by it. Either way it's not something you should dwell on," Drew said, and Alex couldn't help but smile. Drew had always been the more reasonable out of the two of them, ever since they'd met freshman year and decided to join forces. But his ego didn't need boosting, so Alex chose to merely nod in response.

"Okay, now it's time for me to kick your ass once more," Drew grinned and pulled out two controllers from a compartment in the coffee table. "Oh, we'll see who kicks who's ass," Alex said tauntingly, grabbing the other controller from his friend, a smile plastered on his face once more.
