“Do not be alarmed,” a vehicle announced from outside. “A member of every household must represent themselves in a mandatory meeting. It will take place at twelve-hundred hours in this street. Do not be late; those who cannot follow our instructions will be prosecuted.”

Groaning, I sat up from my bed. I yawned and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. I heard enough of the announcement to know I had to go. Putting on slippers, I casually glanced at my watch: 6:30—plenty of time to wake up. I stood up and made breakfast, the sun had barely risen from the ground. After finishing breakfast I stood up and dressed, trying to seem formal enough. I was never one to worry about, so I didn’t bother with any questions of uncertainty.

I waited outside in the streets, cramping at the large crowd around me. The speaker finally stepped onto the stage, making the announcements.

“I understand you are waiting for the announcement, and I know this is strange.” That was an understatement. “But I need everyone to listen closely.

“In recent years, the disease known as Fecebrum has taken a major . . . growth. Now, finding ways to spread through more than animal bites, Fecebrum has become very deadly. If anyone has been in contact, which includes petting, with an animal, you are required to quarantine. And, because this city has not only a large dog park but also a petting zoo, we are requiring a city-wide quarantine. Before anyone objects, please remember Fecebrum is a fatal disease. Now return home, because the quarantine should have already begun. And for those in need of food, we will be providing for you every day.” He walked away before anyone could object or complain.

Feeling suddenly nervous about the crowd, I ran home without a second thought.

Maddening thoughts, ticking away;

curious, as if though, my mind had gone astray.

A change of view from homes across the street,

like a sky of stars, shining bright in a fleet.

What I wouldn’t give to be free from this hell—

a simple step out the door would do me quite well.

As time glooms on at its unsteady pace,

I try to make use of the time that was simply a waste.

Anything, everything, I’d give for someone to hear this plea:
