“Isa!” My eyes flew open and I saw Oliver’s concerned face. “You’re shaking,” he said. Tears streamed down my face, mixing with sweat. Oliver asked, “What’s wrong, Isa?”
The nightmare. Isa, I can’t hold on much longer. The screams. Isolde, help! His voice. Isolde, please!
“What’s wrong, Isa?” he softly asked again. “Tell me. Please.” My lips can’t form words—can’t move. “Isa,” he pleaded. “What’s wrong?”
I started trembling harder, the tears coming faster. Finally, I managed to whisper, “It—it’s nothing.” Oliver didn’t look convinced, but he didn’t press for the truth. Instead, he sat down next to me on the couch and silently stroked my hair. Eventually, my tears stopped and the shaking eased. I broke the silence by asking, “Have you been up this whole time?”
He rubbed the back of his head, saying, “I’ve been up most of the night, but I wouldn’t have come over here if I didn’t hear your scream.”
Seconds passed before I echoed, “...Scream?”
He nodded and said with the slightest tremble in his voice, “You were writhing and screaming like you were in pain. I couldn’t stop it. I—I shook you over and over and over, but you didn’t wake up. I thought you were dying.” Tears filled his eyes and he buried his face in my hair. My tears were back as well and I propped myself up with a nearby pillow.
“Oliver,” I whispered. When he didn’t respond, I said, “Oliver, look at me.” His teary gaze met mine and I pulled his face close to mine and kissed him. It was salty from the combination of our tears, and we were both a mess, but we still pressed close and held tight to each other, not wanting to ever let go.
Rain pattered against the windowpane as I stared out into the grey, dreary sky. Oliver’s strong arms wrapped around my torso, hugging me firmly.
Suddenly, I said, “We should go outside.” He looked startled for a second before he grabbed my hand and pulled me out the door.
We walked to a tall bridge overlooking the river that flowed through our city. Despite the rainfall, people crowded the narrow walkway, pushing and shoving for the best view. We stood, silently admiring the rippling water. I don’t know how long we stood there for, but just as Oliver turned around and opened his mouth to say something, someone shoved into us. I screamed as Oliver was pitched over the railing. The metal rail was coated with raindrops, making it hard for him to get a good grip, yet he managed to hold on with one hand.
“Oliver!” I yelled, lunging for his hand, but someone restrained me. They grabbed my arms and wrenched them behind my back. I wriggled, trying to get a glimpse of my captor.
“Isa!” Oliver said weakly.
I cried out, “Hold on! Someone help him! Please!” My vision was so blurred that I could barely make out the ring of people holding back the surging crowd. Was this a planned attack? Why Oliver? I kicked and flailed, trying to break free, but nothing worked.
“Isa!” he said, louder this time. “Isa, I can’t hold on much longer.”
“Try, Oliver! Please!” I was crying, sobs violently shaking my body.
“Isolde!” he rasped. “Isolde, help!”
I cried out loud as I twisted around, biting my captor’s arm. They let out a grunt, letting go, and I ran to Oliver. Grabbing his fingers and forearm, I pulled. Nothing happened.
“Oliver,” I sobbed.
“Isa!” he said. I kept trying to pull him over the railing. “Isolde, please! Isolde!”
His fingers slipped from my grasp and his body fell backwards.
All I could think was, I’m going to grow up without you. We all will.
This was my worst nightmare, but this time, Oliver wasn’t there to wake me up.
So I threw myself over the railing, mentally telling Oliver, We’ll grow up together.
