It was a bittersweet moment. The snowflakes falling all around the freezing fairy looked like beautiful, graceful ballerinas twirling around the bright blue sky. The sweet little flower fairy was heading home to her cottage deep in the forest. It was times like this she regretted living do far from the village. Each year at wintertime it was a constant battle to get through the freezing wind and snow. Quietly she walked on, looking forward to a warm bowl of soup. Hot, steamy mushroom soup. Her lizard licked the snowflakes that were falling on his grumpy blue face as he tried to snuggle deeper into the pocket of her fleecy coat. He too was looking forward to the warmth of home. The fairy glanced at the stunning scene around her. The slight breeze was making the trees wave their thin branches at her. So thin, they could snap at any moment. She heard a wolf howling in the distance and pulled her coat tighter around her shivering body as she trudged on.
As she got closer to the river the snow began to get deeper and deeper and deeper. Carefully she put her hands in her pockets, making sure not to disturb her friend with her hands which were as cold as ice. Her wings, once a light purple colour, now looked like snowflakes. White and delicate. Her bright green leaf shoes crunched through the snow beneath them. Surprisingly her feet weren’t very cold despite her shoes being as thin as well... leaves. The river, usually flowing loudly, was frozen still. The snowflakes were flying through the sky and landing on the icy river. Slowly she crossed it and looked at the snow on the other side which seemed to be less deep and frightening then the side she had just come from.
Happily, she skipped along looking at all the flowers fighting to get through the snow that was piled on top of them. The colourful flowers reminded her of rainbow sweets on top of a cake, covered in a thick layer of icing. Imagining a cake made her yearn even more for a steaming bowl of mushroom soup. A blue rickety sign that was barely being held together by a single rusty metal nail told her that there was less than a mile to go. As she stopped to adjust her shoe, all she could hear was the sound of her breath and the song of a far-off bird. As the snow stopped falling, the wind started howling like the wolf from farther back on the winding path. She quickened her pace as the wind tried it’s hardest to push her back. Suddenly a tree fell in the fairy’s path with a loud crash that echoed through the woods, causing her to fly up into the frosty air. She was tossed in multiple directions by the cruel wind as she tried to get back down to the safety of the earth.
As soon as she was back on solid ground she started running, battling through the harsh wind and snow as the trees shook with fear around her. She raced on, determined not to be beaten by some measly bad weather. She was a flower fairy, one of the greatest fairies there was. Quickly she knelt on the snow and felt a burst of energy shoot out of her hand and connect with the ground. Slowly a flower came forth through the snow and grew bigger and bigger, until it was as big as a house. A fairy house obviously. It bowed its great head down letting the pair clamber on. She gingerly held onto one of its petals as it raised its head and began to glide like a graceful ice skater over the ground. The fairy nestled deeper into the flower’s sunshine yellow centre as the petals covered her like a blanket, keeping her safe from the strong winded storm.
The flower glided on all the way back to the fairy’s tiny mushroom house complete with a hat of ice and snow. As the flower reached the house it bowed down once again and let the fairy hesitantly glide off, letting a trail of snow fall of her body behind her. Upon thanking the flower for its safe haven, she restored it to its rightful size and watched as it disappeared under the snow that lay at her front door before swiftly hurrying inside. She sat by the warm toasty fire that reminded her of her red flower cousins doing a wild ferocious dance. She warmed up fast and her wings turned back to the light purple colour she knew and loved. Pulling her hood down, she let her hair flow down her back like a golden river before tightly wrapping it in a red ribbon. Gently, she lifted her lizard out of her pocket and put him in his messy bed that reminded her of a pile of autumn leaves. Fluttering over to her stove, she stared in the bubbling pot of soup. She poured herself a bowl, smelling the strong scent of mushroom from the steam that rose as she sat down on her chunky wooden rocking chair. The soup felt as hot as lava compared to the freezing cold air outside. She quickly slurped her soup up as her lizard watched her in disgust.
As soon as she was finished, she carefully washed her wooden bowl in the boiling hot water that came from her red-hot metal tops. A gift from yet another set of fairy cousins. She was a very clean fairy. Despite her garden being a jungle, her house was neat and tidy. Everything was in its proper place. She looked out the window and saw the wind had stopped howling and the snowflakes had stopped dancing and twirling. Maybe it was time to tame the wild mess outside she thought to herself. The wind has blown most of the snow away so it would be a good time to tackle it. She grabbed her coat and put it on as she raced outside. The sun was shining brightly making the rest of the snow look like fallen diamonds, scattered on the ground. She looked around her at the overgrown grass, the many multi coloured flowers and the enormous bushes. She was a flower fairy with a messy garden. Next there would be a water fairy that couldn’t swim or a cat fairy that was afraid of cats. Hesitantly she knelt in the cold snow and set to work.
