I didn’t want to work to become a doctor like my dad or a CEO like my mom, both jobs were out of my league and comfort zone.
All I wanted to do was travel and paint the beautiful sceneries each country had to offer to show people the world through my eyes.
Walking through the door of my Chinese mom and Māori dad however was a different story.
Both had come from very successful backgrounds, my dad a line of doctors and my mother… she came from old money.
Old Chinese money and it was the type where people treated you like you were the Empress or Emperor of your own country.
My grandparents at first weren’t impressed that my mom had brought home a man from another country but as soon as they heard he was brain surgeon at a hospital that paid well and he had fifteen years of experience, they no more or less welcomed him into the family.
So let’s just say when I expressed my thoughts on wanting to apply to the university of arts London, they laughed at how it was beneath them both and my ancestors.
