        桀聽說湯進獻的賢能之士來到，便召見他。

        忠臣關龍逢很喜悅伊尹前來，對他說：「大臣們一直以來苦口婆心地勸諫大王，大王總是不聽。盼君以口才成功使大王改過。」

        伊尹拜見桀，說：「大王隆威，天下敬畏。只是大王長期大興土木，苦了百姓。盼大王仿傚先王諸帝，輕徭薄賦，方為上計。」

       相傳伊尹五次這樣向桀進言，但都未獲接納。忠臣關龍逢來見桀，桀厭煩地說：「又是你！你又有甚麼話要來煩我？」關龍逢回答說：「伊尹是賢能之士，而大王不任用，實在可惜！」

       桀說：「你已經很煩人，再多加一個伊尹，我豈能容忍！」於是遣關龍逢回家。
