“No way.” Thomas’s jaw dropped as he reached out and took the Pendant from Josiah.
Prying his fingers under the gold, he lifted it out of the box, holding it out for everyone to see.
A brown loop hung under the Pendant, torn at its apex. Engraved on the gold was a crown, exactly like Noel’s. The crown was also circled by a series of symbols identical to the other Pendants.
“I want to try it on!” Levi jumped forward and tried to snatch the Pendant out of Thomas’s hand.
Enoch held out a hand to stop him. “Absolutely not. If taking the Pendant off makes them lose their Flair, who knows what will happen if you put one on that isn’t yours.”
The group nodded, agreeing with Enoch.
I stood up and walked to Thomas. He handed the Pendant to me and then reached back into the box.
Holding the Pendant tightly in my hand, I traced the crown and symbols.
“Elizabeth.” Thomas pulled a folded paper out of the box and handed it to me.
Glenn took the Pendant from me and then continued passing it around for the group to see.
Grasping the paper by the corners, I carefully opened it to find the entire side covered by symbols and drawings.
“Look,” Thomas pointed to a drawing in the top corner.
The drawing was the cupped hands from his Pendant. There was another drawing toward the middle of Noel’s crown.
“Wait, so are all of these the Pendants we are going to get?” I looked closer at the other drawings, trying to decipher their meanings.
“Maybe, but what about all this?” Thomas pointed to the writings that were scattered all around the paper. “Does anyone here read Latin?” He looked around the group.
“No. I don’t think this is Latin. Maybe Hebrew? Latin doesn’t have symbols like that,” I showed him.
“I can read both.”
Thomas and I turned around to a boy in the back.
Jack stepped up to us. The black-haired eighteen-year-old wore a pair of jeans and a simple t-shirt, obviously not trying to draw attention to himself.
“Really?” I asked him.
“Yeah. Also, Spanish. And I’m working on Greek.”
“Huh.” I handed the paper to him, surprised that I did not already know that.
He took it from me and tilted it slightly to see it better in the soft light.
“This isn’t Latin or Hebrew.” He squinted, concentrating on the small print. “No, wait. Some of this is Latin. And there is Spanish. Yeah, Hebrew too. But the majority of it is in a language I can’t recognize.” He turned it over and flipped the paper upside down, getting the best view of the cramped writing.
“So, what does it say?” Thomas prompted.
Jack pointed to a line that was written sideways. “This means ‘never lose the Flair.’ And this says, ‘Stay together.’ And here is ‘courage isn’t having the strength to go on,’” he paused as he mentally translated the rest of it, “‘courage is going on even when you don’t have the strength.’”
Suddenly, the light in the room increased drastically. Jack disappeared inside a swarm of white lights.
We knew what was coming before we heard it.
