Why are you crying?

Why do you complain?

Why do you think your hair needs dying?

Why can’t you just stay the same?

What does it matter if you’re short?

What does it matter if you’re tall?

What does it matter if you’re good at sport?

What does it matter if you often fall?

Who else could laugh just as you do?

Who else could name every sparrow and starling?

Who else could be better than you?

Who do you think you are my darling?

You may not know who you are,

But I’ve known all along!

I’ve seen you go when life gets hard,

And I’ve seen you sing your own song.

I’ve seen you fall and scrape your knee

Only to rise from the ground again.

I’ve seen you take on the heat

So another’s heart can mend.

I’ve seen you dance in the rains of life

While the shadows and floods threaten.

I’ve seen you stand strong in the pain and strife

While always being as kind as a kitten.

You may see yourself as a heap of trash,

A piece of art no one could care for,

But I beg to differ on your analysis brash,

And build up your soul even more.

You are special, amazing, and kind.

You have been there for me when needed.

You have been quick to keep in mind

All the pain and hurt others unheeded.

You are a sculpture of intricate beauty,

A painting of vibrant colors on display,

But there is no canvas good enough

To display you and all you do or say.

Michelangelo himself could not compare,

Nor could Leonardo’s works of art.

They do not capture a single hair

Or the depth of your beautiful heart.

So who are you? Well, listen close to me,

You are you, there’s nothing more to it.

And there is no one else I’d rather you be,

For you are your very own masterpiece.
