i woke up. the spot was there. in the center of my forehead. it had no reason to be here. but then, i suppose i didnt either. i had been unemployed for some months. there was no hope of interviews. and now here was my spot. my very own special only friend. in the mirror i pressed it up to the glass. a soft smudge was left when i took my head back. i pressed my finger to the spot. it gave a pleasant sensation. like getting that perfect itch.
in the kitchen the radio had been left running between channels. i switched it off and took toast out of the freezer: 2 slices. then i noticed a second spot on my pointer finger. identical. i pressed it against my thumb. the sensation was actually different than the first spot. less pleasant. i still didnt know what to make of all of this. a knock at the front door and i was distracted. but first i put the toast in the toaster.
at the door was a tall reaper man. he asked to be let in to my house for some tea. he told me that i would be dead in several minutes and that this would make it easier. i complied and put on the kettle and asked if he would like an accompanying slice of toast. he declined, saying that just tea was fine. he asked where my shirt was. suddenly i was very embarrassed as i had forgotten to dress. but looking down i noticed more spots spreading down my torso/legs from points my pointer finger had touched. these stung slightly when re-touched. the reaper told me not to worry so i asked what kind of tea he would like and he replied that just regular was fine.
when our tea was brewed and toast for me finished, we sat in silence for some moments. i regretted having turned off the radio. sometimes a little background noise is all you need. i had a sense of discomfort however, which stopped me from finding comfort. the reaper asked me what was wrong. i explained the discomfort from the spots, which, spreading over more and more skin, were stinging with a sharp pain. i couldnt help but itch them, but this only made it much worse and i started crying slightly which wasnt uncommon for me this time of month but still made me embarrassed in front of a guest.
the reaper suggested to me that i go upstairs and lie down in my bed. so i did so. it was a struggle, especially the stairs, but i made it and collapsed in more pain than ever. the reaper had accompanied me up. he explained that he was sorry that he could not relieve me of the pain to get to the bed but now he would take it all way. out of the corner of my eye i noticed the mirror id smudged with the spot was now a mass of spots and puss and moldy airs. i asked for the reaper to pray for whoever would come to find me. he said that his prayers arent good for the living. then he asked if he had my permission to throw a healing sheet over me. by now i had come to enough consciousness to know what was going on. i told him that he was very welcome and thanks. he did so.
then in a blink the pain was vanished and my skin cleared of the spots. the reaper was a true magician. he then said a prayer to me for long life and guided me outside where the sun shone bright.
