I haven't gone deaf, I know it. If there were sounds to hear, I would hear them. The world just doesn't make sounds anymore. Even the person with me is silent.
I know I can speak, but I never do. There is no reason to, other than I want to stay silent.
The person who stays with me is human, I know it. All I ever see is a silhouette. They don't look human, and yet they are. I don't know who I am, but I know I'm human, that I exist, that I breathe.
It's hard to put a finger on how I know these things, I just do. No one told them to me, but I am certain.
We stand together, hand in hand. The sun is setting. The world is getting darker. There's a field of dead grass in front of us. Beyond that, trees. Green trees. The sun is big and gold, just above the tree tops. We watch as it sets, not a thing wrong. This is how things are meant to be, we know it.
Their hand feels nice. It makes my skin tingle, it's a warm weight in my own. They don't look at me, nor I at them, but I appreciate their presence, I feel it, and I know they feel my presence too.
