Not in the bookstore aisle where dust and quite were supposed to protect me.

You asked where poetry section was.

I pointed. you smiled.

That was the first crack in my armour.

You smelled like coffee and unfinished dreams.

Talked like someone who had read too many love stories

And never believed they’d live one.

But that day I wondered:

Stupid Stars

We laughed about the weather.

Talked about how music is the only honest thing left in the world.

You said your favourite songs were sad ones.

I should’ve taken that as the warning.

The night, sky blinked twice.

I thought maybe

The stars were trying to tell me something.

Maybe they knew-

You’d become

The storm I’d write poems about.

“We never realize the moment something begins to matter-

And this was just the moment

The universe caught up.

Reading Neruda,

And I didn’t even pretend to turn the page of my book.

I just watched you read

Like it was sacred act.

And somehow,

That’s how it all started.

In silence.

With a stranger

Who felt like home.
