597 AD. The Gregorian Mission, sent by Pope Gregory I, lands on the Isle of Thanet where they are warmly welcomed by the King of the Anglo-Saxons, and within a few years King Aethelberht converts to Catholicism.
But behind the history lies the story of Luhlingstow. A town of two halves, one Jute and one Roman, Luhlingstow’s leaders are unwilling to let their own values be displaced by Catholic teachings. Yet in their effort to defend their ideology they soon they find themselves outcast from England itself.
Led by their young and inexperienced Rector, Oeric, son of Hereweald, the people of Luhlingstow are on a quest to find a new home. But in these dark times, is there anywhere left to claim? And is there anywhere to settle that is not under the thumb of the Catholic Church?
Navigating the politics, religion, and geography of Western Europe in the Early Medieval Period will not be an easy task for Oeric, nor for his friend and counsel, Lucius Pollus. As they venture into the unknown, what will they have to sacrifice to ensure their preservation, their values, and ultimately their unity?
