The Twin Who Lived - The Compass Beneath the Black Lake

Early April arrived quietly at Hogwarts.

Winter’s final frost had melted from the castle stones, and the grounds had begun awakening in shades of green and gold. The Black Lake reflected the pale morning sky like dark glass, calm and endless beneath drifting clouds.

Most students remained inside enjoying the weekend.

Mira, however, stood barefoot at the edge of the lake with Draco nearby, her robes folded neatly atop a stone.

The Tidemother’s Tear rested against her chest on the Silverthorne Constellation Choker, glowing softly beneath the spring sunlight.

Lydia surfaced nearby with a graceful splash.

Silver-blue scales shimmered beneath the water as the young mermaid smiled brightly.

“You came back sooner this time,” Lydia teased in melodic Mermish.

Mira laughed softly, “I was told I should take breaks occasionally.”

Draco snorted from shore, “A direct quote from at least six adults.”

Lydia grinned mischievously before diving backward into the water.

Mira followed immediately.

The moment she submerged, the Tidemother’s Tear activated.

The cold vanished instantly.

Magic wrapped around her like a second skin.

She breathed effortlessly beneath the surface.

The lake opened around her in shimmering blues and silvers, currents whispering softly against her skin. Schools of silver fish darted between ancient stone ruins hidden beneath the depths.

Lydia spun gracefully nearby.

“You move better now,” she observed.

“The Tear helps,” Mira admitted.

Far above them, sunlight fractured into drifting ribbons through the water.

They swam deeper.

Past forests of swaying lakeweed.

Past old carved stones worn smooth by centuries.

Past ruins most Hogwarts students never even knew existed.

Lydia slowed suddenly.

Her expression shifted, “Wait.”

Mira stopped immediately.

She felt it too.

A strange pull.

Not dangerous.

Old.

The Tidemother’s Tear pulsed faintly against her chest.

Down below—

half buried beneath layers of silt and stone—

something gleamed.

Lydia pointed excitedly, “There!”

The two descended carefully.

The lake floor here looked ancient, broken remnants of carved pathways disappearing beneath mud and moss. Tiny silver crabs scattered as Mira brushed debris aside.

Then her fingers struck metal.

A chest.

Small enough to carry.

But impossibly old.

Its surface was covered in layered runic engravings nearly worn away by time.

Emerald lines curled along one side.

Gold knotwork along another.

Silver geometric patterns intertwined between deep crimson markings.

The chest trembled faintly when Mira touched it.

Lydia’s eyes widened, “The founders…”

Mira stared at it silently.

Even underwater, she could feel the magic humming through the metal.

Not dark.

Protective.

Purposeful.

Together, they lifted it carefully.

The chest resisted at first—

then suddenly became lighter.

As though recognizing intention.

By the time they surfaced near shore, Draco was already standing.

The moment he saw the chest—

his eyes widened, “…Why do I feel like I should be concerned?”

“Probably because you know us,” Mira replied.

Lydia helped guide the chest onto the rocky shoreline.

Water streamed from its ancient surface.

Up close, the details became clearer.

Interwoven founder symbols.

Not separated.

Connected.

No house stood above another.

Draco crouched beside Mira.

“That’s old.”

“Very old,” Mira murmured.

The chest had no visible lock.

No keyhole.

Only a circular indentation at its center.

The Tidemother’s Tear glowed softly.

Then—

unexpectedly—

the chest clicked.

The lid opened on its own.

Warm light spilled outward instantly.

Not blinding.

Gentle.

Like dawn breaking after a long night.

Inside rested a circular artifact about the size of Mira’s palm.

Draco inhaled sharply.

The object was beautiful.

Crafted from intertwined metals that should not have blended so seamlessly together.

Gold threaded around silver.

Deep red inlays curved between emerald filaments that pulsed softly like living veins.

Each founder’s influence was present.

Not divided.

Unified.

At the center rested a crystal disk resembling a compass face.

But instead of directions—

there were shifting constellations.

Mira lifted it carefully.

The artifact hummed immediately against her skin.

And suddenly—

the compass needle moved.

Not north.

Toward Hogwarts.

Draco frowned.

“That’s not a normal compass.”

“No,” Mira whispered.

The artifact pulsed again.

Then words slowly appeared around the crystal surface in glowing script:

To those who seek not power…

but understanding.

The lake behind them stirred softly.

Lydia looked awestruck, “The founders left this here…”

Mira turned the Compass over carefully.

On the reverse side were four engraved symbols surrounding a fifth empty circle at the center.

Not blank.

Waiting.

The Tidemother’s Tear shimmered faintly.

And for just a moment—

the compass emitted a projection of light above itself.

A map.

Ancient Hogwarts grounds.

Far older than the current castle.

Draco stared, “…That cannot possibly be good for our stress levels.”

Mira couldn’t help smiling.

“No,” she admitted quietly, “Probably not.”

By the time Mira and Draco arrived outside the Headmaster’s office, the Founder’s Compass had already become noticeably active.

Soft streams of colored light moved beneath the crystal surface.

Gold.

Silver.

Red.

Emerald.

The shifting constellations inside the compass turned slowly like living stars.

Draco eyed it suspiciously as they climbed the spiral staircase, “I’m beginning to think Hogwarts itself keeps hiding things specifically for you.”

Mira adjusted the artifact carefully in her hands, “I don’t think that’s how ancient magic works.”

Draco gave her a flat look, “Mira.”

“…Fair point.” Mira admitted.

The gargoyle leapt aside.

Inside the office, nearly everyone had already gathered.

Dumbledore stood near his desk speaking quietly with McGonagall while Flitwick balanced precariously atop several floating books. Sprout was examining a strange flowering vine Myraleth had apparently brought from the Silent Grove.

Snape sat rigidly in a high-backed chair looking prepared for disappointment in advance.

Alaric leaned near the window.

Professor Binns floated halfway through a cabinet.

Myraleth turned first as Mira entered.

Then her amethyst eyes settled on the Compass.

The Vaelori healer immediately went still.

“…That,” she said softly, “is founder magic.”

Every head in the room turned.

Draco closed the door behind them.

“We found it buried beneath the Black Lake,” he explained. “Inside an ancient chest.”

Snape looked exhausted already, “Of course you did.”

Mira carefully placed the Compass onto Dumbledore’s desk.

The artifact reacted instantly.

The crystal surface brightened.

Colored light reflected across the office walls.

Dumbledore stepped closer slowly.

For once—

the old wizard looked genuinely astonished, “My word…”

Flitwick nearly squeaked in excitement, “The metalwork alone is extraordinary!”

McGonagall studied the intertwined craftsmanship carefully, “Gold. Silver. Emerald filaments… and Gryffindor crimson.”

“Unified construction,” Myraleth murmured quietly. “Not separated by house.”

Binns drifted closer through the desk, “I have never seen mention of such an object in Hogwarts records…”

Snape’s dark eyes narrowed, “That is either extremely concerning or extremely significant.”

“Both,” Draco muttered.

Mira explained quietly, “Lydia and I felt something beneath the lake while swimming. The Tidemother’s Tear reacted first.”

At the mention of the mermaid relic, Firenze—who had silently entered moments earlier—lowered his head slightly.

“The lake guided you.”

Mira nodded, “There was an ancient chest buried beneath ruins underwater.”

Dumbledore looked sharply toward her, “Ruins?”

“Older than Hogwarts,” Mira confirmed.

Myraleth’s expression darkened thoughtfully, “The grounds were sacred long before the castle existed.”

Alaric folded his arms quietly, “That’s becoming a recurring theme lately.”

Snape pinched the bridge of his nose, “Wonderful.”

Dumbledore gently touched the edge of the Compass.

The artifact hummed softly beneath his fingertips.

Then—

the crystal center lit up fully.

The office darkened automatically.

A projection of light expanded outward above the desk.

Everyone stared.

An enormous map unfolded through the air in shimmering silver-blue light.

Not modern Hogwarts.

Ancient Hogwarts.

Or rather—

the land before Hogwarts.

Dense forests.

Dragon sanctuaries.

Merfolk waterways.

Ancient stone circles.

Vaelori pathways.

Ashkeeper settlements.

And at the center—

the earliest foundation lines of the castle itself.

McGonagall inhaled sharply, “Good heavens…”

“The founders built around existing sanctuaries,” Flitwick whispered.

Myraleth stared at the map silently, “They honored what came before.”

The projection shifted again.

Now four lights appeared around the castle grounds.

Gold.

Silver.

Red.

Emerald.

Each pulsed steadily.

The Compass itself began rotating slowly.

Then the needle stopped.

Pointing southwest of Hogwarts.

Toward somewhere deep beneath the grounds.

Draco immediately frowned, “…I dislike that.”

Snape looked murderous, “No one is going exploring hidden underground chambers tonight.”

The Compass ignored him completely.

New words appeared around its crystal surface in glowing script.

Where knowledge was divided…

let understanding guide the way.

Binns drifted backward slightly, “A founder directive…”

Dumbledore’s blue eyes sharpened, “The Compass was meant to locate something.”

“Or several things,” Myraleth added quietly.

Sprout looked concerned now, “What exactly?”

No one answered immediately.

Because the projection had changed again.

This time—

the four founder colors slowly intertwined.

Not competing.

Blending.

Until a fifth silver-white light appeared at the center.

The entire office became very still.

Firenze’s gaze shifted slowly toward Mira.

“The convergence point,” he murmured.

Snape looked deeply displeased by how correct that sounded.

Draco crossed his arms tightly, “I’m starting to feel like every ancient magical object in Britain has decided Mira is involved now.”

Ragnok—who had quietly entered with Griphook midway through the discussion—gave a low grunt, “Ancient magic recognizes patterns long before people do.”

Griphook’s sharp eyes fixed on the Compass, “This artifact was hidden intentionally.”

Dumbledore nodded slowly, “Yes.”

His gaze lingered on the ancient map suspended above the desk.

“The founders did not leave this behind accidentally.”

The Compass pulsed once more.

Then suddenly—

a soft female voice echoed faintly through the office.

Ancient.

Wise.

Gentle.

“Let none seek alone what was built together.”

The light vanished instantly afterward.

Silence crashed into the room.

Even Snape looked startled.

Flitwick whispered breathlessly, “Rowena…”

Myraleth’s eyes remained fixed on the now-darkened Compass.

“No,” she said quietly.

“Not one founder.”

Her gaze moved across the intertwined metals.

“All four.”
