The Twin Who Lived - A Dragon for a Broken Heart

The Gryffindor common room was quieter than usual.

Not silent—Fred and George still argued over exploding snap in one corner, and a group of second-years laughed near the staircase—but quieter in the way a room became when everyone knew someone was hurting.

Ron Weasley sat hunched near the fireplace, elbows on his knees, staring blankly into the flames.

His empty rat cage rested beside the armchair.

Open.

Abandoned.

For the past year, Scabbers had slept in Ron’s dormitory.

Curled beside his books.

Hidden in his pockets.

Sleeping on his bed.

And now every memory felt wrong.

Peter Pettigrew.

A grown wizard.

A traitor.

A coward hiding in plain sight.

Ron looked sick every time he thought about it.

Fred and George had spent most of the afternoon trying to cheer him up.

It hadn’t worked.

Percy had attempted logical reassurance.

That had somehow made it worse.

Hermione kept offering tea.

Harry mostly stayed nearby in quiet support, knowing there probably weren’t words for this.

Ron groaned and buried his face in his hands again, “I let that thing sleep next to my face…”

Before another conversation could begin, the portrait hole opened.

That alone caused confusion.

Draco carrying a covered basket was even stranger.

Ron blinked, “…Why are you here?”

Mira walked over calmly, “We heard you were having a rough time.”

Ron muttered something unintelligible into his sleeves.

Harry looked relieved to see them.

Hermione straightened, “Mira, you really didn’t have to—”

“I know,” Mira said gently.

She stopped in front of Ron.

Then carefully lowered the basket into his lap.

Ron frowned, “…What’s this?”

“Open it.”

The entire common room leaned closer.

Even Fred and George stopped moving.

Ron slowly pulled back the cloth covering the basket.

Then froze.

Inside sat the tiniest dragon Ron had ever seen.

The creature looked barely larger than a kitten.

Cream-colored fur blended into warm amber scales along its spine and tail. Small, feathered wings shifted excitedly while golden-orange eyes blinked up at Ron curiously.

The little dragon chirped softly.

Then sneezed a tiny puff of smoke directly into Ron’s face.

The common room exploded.

“No way—”

“Is that a dragon?!”

“It’s adorable!”

Percy nearly dropped his book.

Draco smirked faintly.

“Teacup dragon,” he explained. “Miniature breed.”

Ron stared at the creature like he couldn’t process reality anymore.

The tiny dragon climbed carefully onto his sleeve, sniffed his jumper, then curled immediately into his lap as if it had already decided Ron belonged to him.

Ron’s ears turned slightly red, “…You’re giving him to me?”

Mira nodded, “He’s young enough to bond easily.”

The little dragon gave another tiny chirp.

“He’ll need care, patience, attention, proper feeding schedules—”

“So basically perfect for Ron,” Fred interrupted immediately.

Ron ignored him completely.

Because for the first time in days—

he smiled.

Small.

Fragile.

But real.

The dragon nudged against Ron’s hand curiously.

Then began chewing lightly on one of his sweater sleeves.

George pointed dramatically, “Look at that. Already eating Weasley knitwear. He’s family.”

Even Hermione laughed softly at that.

Ron carefully lifted the tiny dragon closer.

Its wings fluttered happily.

“…He’s warm,” Ron murmured.

“Teacup dragons naturally run hotter than most magical creatures,” Mira explained. “They’re companion breeds. Gentle temperament. Very emotionally responsive.”

Ron blinked, “You researched this?”

Draco snorted, “She researches everything.”

Mira ignored him.

The little dragon yawned suddenly, releasing another tiny curl of smoke.

Harry leaned closer, “What’s his name?”

Ron looked down at the tiny creature curled comfortably in his arms.

For a moment, the sadness still lingered in his eyes.

But it no longer looked overwhelming.

Then slowly—

“Scorch,” Ron decided.

The dragon chirped immediately.

Fred pointed, “He approves!”

Scorch climbed awkwardly onto Ron’s shoulder and wrapped his tail loosely around the back of Ron’s neck.

Like he had always belonged there.

The common room softened visibly at the sight.

Even Percy smiled faintly now.

Ron looked toward Mira quietly, “…Thanks.”

Not awkward.

Not embarrassed.

Genuine.

Mira smiled softly, “You deserved a better companion.”

Ron glanced at Scorch, whose tiny wings twitched sleepily against his shoulder.

Then back at the empty rat cage beside the chair.

For the first time since Pettigrew’s arrest—

the cage didn’t feel like a wound anymore.

Just something left behind.

The first week after Scorch arrived at Gryffindor Tower was chaos.

Not dangerous chaos.

Small chaos.

Persistent chaos.

The kind only a tiny dragon could create.

Ron woke the very next morning to find Scorch asleep on his head.

Not beside him.

On him.

Mostly because he followed Ron everywhere.

Scorch slept on his shoulder.

If Ron ate—

Scorch attempted to steal toast.

If Ron played wizard chess—

Scorch sat beside the board hissing aggressively at enemy pieces.

“He’s more competitive than you are,” Hermione observed one evening.

“That’s impossible,” Ron said automatically.

Scorch immediately bit one of Ron’s chess knights and refused to let go.

Fred declared him an honorary Weasley on the spot.

George tried teaching him how to steal Percy’s quills.

Percy objected strongly.

Scorch stole the quills anyway.

The common room slowly adjusted around him.

Students began leaving little blankets near the fireplace because Scorch liked warm places.

Lavender knitted him a tiny red scarf.

Parvati charmed small cushions for him to nap on.

Neville secretly fed him tiny bits of bacon under the table during breakfast.

McGonagall pretended not to notice.

Mostly.

Though she did once pause mid-lecture while Scorch peeked sleepily from Ron’s robes.

“…Mr. Weasley.”

Ron froze, “Yes, Professor?”

“Your dragon is snoring.”

The entire Transfiguration class collapsed into laughter.

Ron turned scarlet.

Scorch snorted awake indignantly.

But beneath the humor—

something else slowly changed too.

The nightmares stopped first.

Not entirely.

But enough.

Ron no longer woke up feeling sick every night remembering Scabbers curled at the foot of his bed.

Because now when he woke—

Scorch was there instead.

Warm.

Real.

Honest.

A creature that trusted openly instead of hiding secrets beneath fur and false helplessness.

One night, weeks after Pettigrew’s arrest, Harry found Ron sitting alone near the common room fireplace.

Scorch lay curled in Ron’s lap, glowing faintly orange from the heat of the fire.

Ron scratched gently beneath the dragon’s chin.

“I keep thinking about it,” Ron admitted quietly.

Harry sat beside him, “The rat thing?”

Ron nodded, “For years I thought Scabbers was useless.”

A humorless laugh escaped him.

“Turns out he was worse than useless.”

Scorch made a soft chirping sound and nudged Ron’s wrist.

Ron’s expression softened slightly.

“But this little menace…”

The dragon immediately attempted to chew his sleeve.

“…okay, yeah, definitely a menace.”

Harry laughed quietly.

But then Ron looked down at Scorch again.

“He’s honest.”

That sentence lingered softly between them.

Ron exhaled slowly.

“When Scorch likes someone, you know it.”

The dragon curled closer against him.

“No pretending,” Ron murmured, “No hiding.”

For the first time since Pettigrew’s arrest—

the anger in Ron’s voice no longer sounded raw.

Just tired.

Healing.

Scorch, meanwhile, developed increasingly strange habits.

He adored Hermione.

Hated umbrellas.

And was utterly obsessed with treacle tart.

One unfortunate afternoon, he managed to sneak into the kitchens and returned triumphantly dragging half a cinnamon bun larger than his own body.

“He’s learning from Fred and George,” Hermione accused.

Fred looked offended, “Scorch transcends mentorship.”

George nodded solemnly, “He is an artist.”

By the third week, Scorch had unofficially become part of Gryffindor Tower itself.

Students greeted him in the mornings.

He attended study groups.

Lee Jordan once commentated an entire exploding snap game using Scorch as the “honorary referee.”

And every night—

without fail—

the tiny dragon curled against Ron before sleep.

Sometimes on his shoulder.

Sometimes beside his pillow.

Sometimes tangled inside Ron’s blankets like a tiny furnace.

One rainy evening, Mira and Draco visited the common room again.

This time nobody reacted much to Draco’s presence anymore.

Which Draco found deeply offensive.

Scorch immediately spotted Mira from across the room and launched himself dramatically from Ron’s lap.

The tiny dragon fluttered unevenly through the air before crash-landing directly into Mira’s arms.

“Well,” Draco said dryly. “Traitor.”

Scorch chirped happily.

Ron laughed.

A real laugh.

Easy now.

Unforced.

Mira noticed immediately.

And so did Harry.

The shadow that had followed Ron after Pettigrew’s arrest wasn’t gone completely.

Maybe it never would be.

But now—

it no longer defined him.

Ron reached over and took Scorch back carefully.

The dragon immediately wrapped around his wrist like living warmth.

Fred pointed dramatically from the sofa, “Look at them.”

George sighed theatrically, “A boy and his dragon.”

Scorch sneezed a tiny puff of smoke directly into Ron’s hair.

Ron groaned while everyone laughed.

And for the first time in a very long while—

the memory of Scabbers no longer felt like poison.

Because when Ron looked down now—

he no longer saw betrayal curled in his hands.

He saw Scorch.
