The Apex Sentinel was dying.
The ship’s back had broken across a hidden reef, and the Atlantic was roaring into the cargo hold like a hungry beast. The water was waist-deep now, freezing and slick with oil.
"Leo! Move!" Thorne shouted, firing his last magazine into a pair of Vipers trying to block the stairwell. "The reactor is slaved to her bio-signs! If we don't get her out of the interference zone, she’s a walking bomb!"
Leo had Maya’s arm draped over his shoulder. The midnight-black armor that had made her a god was now just dead weight, dragging them both into the rising tide. Her breathing was ragged, coming in short, panicked bursts that synced with the red light blinking on her temple.
"Vance! Where is our exit?" Leo yelled.
"Sub-hangar, Deck 4!" Vance’s voice was strained. She was likely fighting off a system-wide counter-hack. "There’s a pressurized tactical sub. But Leo—the Director is rerouting all power to the self-destruct. You have three minutes before that chip in her head reaches critical mass!"
They scrambled up the tilting companionway, Brick providing a wall of lead behind them. They reached the sub-hangar just as a massive monitor on the wall flickered to life.
The image wasn't a man, but a silhouette—a shadow seated in a high-backed chair, surrounded by 1930s-style mahogany and chrome. Only his eyes were visible, reflected in the polished surface of his desk. The Director.
"A valiant effort, Sergeant Miller," the voice echoed, smooth as silk and cold as a grave. "But you are trying to save a ghost. Maya died years ago. What you hold is merely a vessel for my will."
Leo stopped, glarying at the screen while Maya slumped against him. "She’s my sister. And she just remembered my name. Your 'will' is broken."
The silhouette tilted its head. "Is it? Technology is like nature, Leo. It does not care for your sentiment. I have spent a century building the Ouroboros Circle. Do you truly think one soldier’s 'honor' can undo a hundred years of progress?"
"Watch us," Leo spat.
"Leo... he's... he's in the system..." Maya gasped, her brown eyes wide with terror. She grabbed Leo’s hand, her fingers digging into his glove. "The Icarus Core... it isn't just a battery. It's a key. He’s not trying to shut things down... he’s trying to upload."
"Enough," the Director said. "Revenant, complete the purge."
Maya screamed, her body jerking as the chip sent a massive neural spike through her spine. The red light on her head went solid.
"Brick! Now!" Thorne roared.
Brick didn't hesitate. He swung his massive machine gun and leveled the entire monitor array, the screen exploding in a shower of sparks and glass. The Director’s voice vanished into static.
"Get her in the sub! Now!" Thorne shoved Leo toward the small, rugged vessel docked in the center of the bay.
They piled inside, the metal groaning as the hangar began to crumple under the pressure of the ocean. Vance was already in the pilot's seat, her fingers flying over manual toggle switches.
"Submerged launch in five... four..."
"Leo," Maya whispered, her voice barely audible over the groaning steel. She looked at him, and for a second, the silver didn't return. "I'm sorry. For everything I did."
"Don't," Leo said, strapping her into a crash seat. "We're Vanguard. We don't look back."
The sub launched just as the Apex Sentinel vanished into a fireball of blue energy. The shockwave slammed into the small craft, tossing them like a toy in a washing machine.
Leo held onto Maya’s hand as the darkness of the deep ocean swallowed them. Outside the porthole, the glowing blue debris of the Icarus Project sank into the abyss, but the red light on Maya’s temple—though dimming—was still there.
They had survived the ship. But as Leo looked at his sister, he realized the war for her soul had only just begun. The Director wasn't finished; he was just getting started.
