Chapter 5

You Left Us Here

The words hung in the air long after the creature stopped speaking.

“You left us here.”

Aya backed away from the door until her legs hit one of the rusted hospital beds.

“No...” she whispered.

The creature wearing Riya’s face smiled wider.

CRACK.

Another fracture spread across the glass window.

The man stepped forward immediately.

“Do not listen to it.”

“What does it mean?” Aya asked, her voice trembling.

The man didn't answer.

That terrified her more than the creature.

Outside, the thing slowly placed its hand against the glass.

The skin began peeling away like wet paper.

Underneath was not flesh.

It was darkness.

Pure darkness.

Aya felt her stomach twist.

“Who are you people?” she shouted. “What do you want from me?”

The creature tilted its head.

Then it laughed.

The sound was wrong.

It sounded like dozens of voices speaking together.

“You forgot us.”

A sudden headache struck Aya.

Her vision blurred.

For a moment, the hospital room disappeared.

She was somewhere else.

A child's bedroom.

Pink walls.

A small mirror.

Rain tapping against a window.

A little girl sat alone on the floor crying.

The girl slowly looked up.

It was Aya.

Not the Aya of today.

A younger Aya.

Terrified.

Holding something tightly against her chest.

Then the vision vanished.

Aya nearly fell to her knees.

The man caught her before she hit the floor.

“What was that?” she gasped.

His expression darkened.

“A memory.”

“Whose memory?”

The man looked away.

“Yours.”

Outside, the creature suddenly stopped moving.

The hallway became silent.

Too silent.

Aya's heart pounded harder.

“Why did it stop?”

The man slowly stepped back from the door.

His face turned pale.

“Because it heard something.”

A distant sound echoed through the building.

A bell.

One single ring.

DONG.

The entire hospital ward shook violently.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

DONG.

The second bell sounded louder.

The creature outside immediately turned toward the darkness of the corridor.

For the first time, fear appeared on its face.

Aya noticed it.

The thing was afraid.

DONG.

The third bell echoed through the building.

The lights died.

Every light.

Darkness swallowed the room completely.

Aya could hear breathing.

Not one person.

Not two.

Hundreds.

All around them.

Inside the walls.

Above the ceiling.

Under the floor.

The building felt crowded with unseen things.

Then a new voice spoke from somewhere beyond the door.

Deep.

Ancient.

Cold.

“Aya.”

The creature outside screamed.

Not in anger.

In terror.

Something dragged it away down the hallway.

Its scream grew fainter.

Then silence returned.

Aya could barely breathe.

“What was that?” she whispered.

The man stood perfectly still.

His eyes fixed on the darkness.

When he finally spoke, his voice was almost a whisper.

“The owner of this place.”

A chill ran through Aya's body.

“There's someone controlling all of this?”

The man slowly nodded.

“No.”

Aya frowned.

“Then what is it?”

The man looked directly at her.

His eyes were full of dread.

“It isn't someone.”

A loud crash echoed somewhere below the building.

The floor trembled.

The walls groaned.

And for the first time since entering the nightmare, the man looked genuinely afraid.
