It had only been a week since he became a part of the next door neighbour’s family.

I wanted a friend.

The strays didn’t like me.

So I was glad I wasn’t the only pet around here anymore.

His name was Tom.

I liked Tom.

He looked similar to their previous dog only a bit smaller.

We got along together, going on walks, our owners treated us well by feeding treats we loved the most.

Often barked and fought with each other but in the end, we were still friends so it never mattered much.

He liked tennis balls.

His owner always had one with him when he and I went to the park.

My owner would stroke Tom’s fur with a smile on his face.

Tom’s ears drooped everytime he got closer.

We would run around and roll in the grass.

Tom was very friendly, at least with me.

My owner spoke to Tom’s owner every now and then.

I was happy that they were becoming close just like me and Tom.

But something went wrong.

I stopped seeing him everyday.

He would be in his house.

I heard him bark and growl.

His owner would feed me my favourite treats but he stopped carrying tennis balls.

He didn’t let Tom outside for days.

I didn’t understand what was going on.

I missed Tom.

He was as friendly as ever.

So why was he not out of the house like before?

I roamed around until I got tired.

Someone came out the door and left food out for us at night.

But I was already full so I slept instead.

When I woke up.

I saw Tom.

I was happy to see him again until…

He wasn’t feeling well.

The food bowl was empty.

I got close to him.

He smelled odd.

Tom dropped to the ground.

For a moment, his eyes looked at me and soon after he started to gag.

He vomited, over and over again.

And then he went still.

Tom was dead.

My owner came out of the house and smiled, tilting his head.

I looked towards Tom.

His eyes glistened with tears.

Why would someone do this to Tom?

I thought he would stay unlike the previous dog who died the same way.

After all, he was as friendly as ever.

At least with me.
