Fantasy world contest - The Silent Kingdom

I should have gone home when the butterfly appeared.

It drifted past my window just as the sun was beginning to set, glowing softly like a floating piece of moonlight. At first, I thought it was a trick of the evening light. Butterflies didn't glow.

This one did.

It hovered outside for a moment, then floated toward the forest beyond my village.

I don't know why I followed it.

Maybe it was curiosity. Maybe it was boredom. Maybe it was the strange feeling that it wanted me to.

Whatever the reason, I grabbed my jacket and went after it.

The butterfly never flew too fast. Whenever I thought I had lost it, I would catch another glimpse of silver light between the trees. The deeper I went into the forest, the quieter everything became.

First, the birds stopped singing.

Then the insects disappeared.

Even the wind seemed to fade.

Soon, the only sound left was my own breathing.

I should have turned back.

Instead, I kept walking.

The trees slowly changed around me. Their trunks shimmered faintly in the growing darkness, and their leaves looked almost like crystal. The air felt different too—cooler, lighter, as though I had stepped into a dream.

Then I reached a stone archway covered in glowing vines.

The butterfly passed through it.

I followed.

The world beyond was unlike anything I had ever seen.

Silver rivers wound through fields of blue grass. Crystal trees stretched toward a sky filled with unfamiliar stars. Tiny lights floated through the air like living lanterns.

And in the distance stood a city.

For a moment, I simply stared.

It felt impossible.

Beautiful.

Magical.

And completely silent.

As I entered the city, people began to notice me. They wore flowing clothes embroidered with silver thread, and their eyes widened slightly when they saw me.

I smiled nervously.

"Hello?"

Nobody answered.

Not because they ignored me.

Because they didn't speak.

One woman raised her hand instead.

A glowing blue butterfly emerged from her palm and fluttered toward me. It circled my head once before dissolving into sparkling dust.

Suddenly, I understood what she meant.

Welcome.

I nearly stumbled backward.

The woman smiled.

Another butterfly appeared, this one golden.

Curiosity.

The message arrived in my mind as clearly as spoken words.

I spent the rest of the day discovering how the kingdom communicated. Every thought, feeling, or message became a butterfly of light.

Blue meant welcome.

Gold meant curiosity.

Green meant gratitude.

Hundreds of colors filled the air around me as people spoke without making a single sound.

It was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen.

At least, that's what I thought.

As sunset approached, everything changed.

The streets emptied.

Shopkeepers closed their doors.

Families hurried indoors.

The butterflies disappeared from the sky.

Fear spread through the city like a shadow.

I watched people glance nervously toward the horizon.

No one would explain why.

Every time I tried asking, they simply released pale gray butterflies.

Worry.

Warning.

Silence.

When darkness finally arrived, the city looked abandoned.

I sat inside the room I had been given, staring out the window.

The kingdom that had seemed so alive only hours earlier now looked frozen.

Then I noticed movement.

Someone was walking through the empty street below.

No.

Not someone.

Something.

My breath caught.

The figure was tall and thin, wrapped in dark robes that dragged across the ground.

Its face was completely blank.

No eyes.

No nose.

No mouth.

Just smooth skin where a face should have been.

Another appeared behind it.

Then another.

Dozens of them wandered through the streets, moving slowly as if searching for something.

I knew I should stay hidden.

I knew it.

But curiosity had already brought me this far.

So I slipped outside.

The night air felt colder than before.

The faceless creatures drifted through the city without speaking.

Without making a sound.

I followed from a distance.

One of them suddenly stopped.

Every other creature froze.

The silence became unbearable.

Then I looked down.

My foot was resting on a fallen branch.

Before I could move—

Snap.

The sound echoed through the street.

Every faceless head turned toward me.

I couldn't breathe.

I couldn't move.

For one horrible second, nobody moved at all.

Then the creatures rushed forward.

I ran.

Their footsteps made no sound behind me, but I could feel them getting closer.

I darted through empty streets and silver-lit alleys, my heart pounding so loudly I was sure they could hear it.

Maybe they could.

A glowing butterfly suddenly appeared beside me.

Then another.

And another.

The people of the kingdom were watching from their windows.

Hundreds of butterflies filled the air.

Blue.

Gold.

Green.

Then one color I hadn't seen before.

Bright white.

The butterflies surged forward.

I chased them.

Behind me, the creatures continued their pursuit.

The butterflies led me to the center of the city, where a massive crystal tree rose into the sky.

The white butterflies swirled around its trunk.

I didn't hesitate.

I climbed.

The creatures reached the tree moments later.

They surrounded it, staring upward with their blank faces.

The butterflies gathered around me until I could barely see.

Then a voice entered my mind.

Not spoken.

Felt.

Long ago, we woke something beneath our world.

The voice belonged to the kingdom itself.

It feeds on sound.

Every word.

Every song.

Every cry.

The more it hears, the stronger it becomes.

So the people abandoned speech.

Generations passed.

Silence became survival.

Below me, the faceless creatures remained perfectly still.

They weren't monsters.

I suddenly realized what they were.

Listeners.

Servants of whatever slept beneath the kingdom.

Waiting for noise.

Waiting to feed it.

The butterflies glowed brighter.

Leave now.

Before it hears you again.

The crystal tree trembled.

A doorway of silver light appeared among its branches.

I didn't argue.

I jumped through.

The next thing I knew, I was back in the forest outside my village.

The sun was rising.

Birds sang overhead.

Wind rustled through the trees.

Sound.

Beautiful, ordinary sound.

For a long time, I stood there listening to it.

Sometimes, I still wonder if the Silent Kingdom was real.

But every now and then, just after sunset, a glowing butterfly appears outside my window.
