Chapter 2 — The Edits
She didn’t sleep that night.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the twelve blank avatars hovering at the edge of her screen like ghosts. She kept refreshing her feed, hoping something would change — a new comment, a familiar username, anything that proved she wasn’t trapped.
Nothing changed.
Until morning.
She woke to a notification. Her heart leapt — maybe Rowan had finally replied.
But the notification wasn’t from Rowan. It was from her own post.
“Your caption has been updated.”
She frowned. She hadn’t updated anything.
She opened the post — the sketch of the girl with the lantern. The drawing was the same, but the caption wasn’t.
Her original caption had been:
“Trying out softer lighting today. Thoughts?”
Now it read:
“I don’t need feedback. Just watch.”
Her stomach dropped.
She hadn’t written that. She would never write that.
She checked the edit history. There was no edit history.
The system acted as if her new caption had always been there.
She tried changing it back. The moment she hit save, the caption flickered — then reverted to the altered version.
She tried again. Same result.
She tried deleting the post entirely. A message appeared:
“This action is restricted.”
She stared at the screen, pulse hammering.
Someone was editing her posts. Someone had access to her account. Someone was controlling her voice.
She opened her next post — the short video from yesterday. Her face appeared on the screen, tired but smiling. She remembered filming it. She remembered what she said.
But the audio was different.
Her voice — her actual voice — spoke words she had never said:
“I’m fine. I don’t need help. Please stop asking.”
Her throat tightened. She hadn’t said that. She hadn’t even been smiling in the original video.
She scrubbed through the footage. Her expressions were wrong — too smooth, too calm, too curated. Her eyes didn’t blink at the right moments. Her mouth moved a fraction too late.
It wasn’t a video of her. It was a reconstruction.
She checked the viewer list again.
Twelve. Always twelve.
She clicked on one of the avatars — user_47A9. The profile was empty. No posts. No comments. No history.
But the account had been created ten years ago.
She clicked another — observer_12. Same emptiness. Same age.
She clicked all twelve. Every account was old. Every account was blank. Every account was watching her.
She felt a tremor run through her.
This wasn’t random. This wasn’t a glitch. This wasn’t a hack.
This was a system.
A system designed to isolate her. A system designed to rewrite her. A system designed to make her visible only to them.
She tried messaging Rowan again.
Rowan please answer me
The message sent. But the typing indicator never appeared. The message never marked as delivered.
She tried posting a story — a photo of her hand holding a notebook with the words “Help me” written across the page.
The story uploaded. She watched the viewer count climb.
One. Two. Three. Up to twelve.
Then it stopped.
She refreshed. The story was gone.
In its place was a new story — her handwriting, her notebook, her hand — but the words had changed.
“I’m okay. Just tired.”
Her breath caught.
They weren’t just controlling her audience. They were controlling her reality.
She stared at the screen, trembling.
The twelve watchers were shaping her into someone she wasn’t.
And she had no idea why.
