As I walked into the theatre, I saw him. One of the most well-known men in the country. He was both loved and hated by many. His dark black hair was combed nicely and I couldn't keep my eyes off of his chiseled features. The wrinkles on his forehead and darkness under his eyes exposed the toll his job carried. Although he was quite older, I could not help but be attracted to him. I usually would have admired from afar, but something inside me cried out for an interaction. I walked up to him, my hands trembling. I tried to speak, but only a breathe escaped my lips. He looked at me with his deep eyes. I knew once I stared into those mesmerizing grey eyes, I had no chance.
"Well, hello there," he said, "My name is-"
"I know who you are" I smiled, "I am so thrilled to meet you". I stared at the ground as I fidgeted around with my hands.
"Well, likewise Miss..." his voice trailed off as he awaited my response.
"Powell. Genevieve Powell" I said, still looking down. His voice was much deeper than I anticipated, his tone was kind and strong.
"Well, Miss Powell, you are a sight for sore eyes, my dear". He gently grabbed my hand and his lips lightly brushed the top of it.
"Oh, nonsense" I blushed. He was certainly just trying to be nice.
"Truly, you are one of the most beautiful women I have met" he replied. The tone in his voice was so honest, I could not help but believe him.
"Well, you are the most handsome man I have ever laid my eyes on," I said, still looking down at the floor. He chuckled as his hand lightly lifted my chin so my eyes would meet his.
"You are truly too kind. Would you like to converse during the intermission a bit more?"
"I would love too!" I beamed, I could not believe who I was talking to. He seemed to be flirtatious, but I didn't know if it was all in my head.
"Well, I will see you then," he said as he extended his left hand for me to shake. I shook his hand and immediately my heart sank. I felt the cold metal of his wedding ring. I had conveniently forgotten he was married. How could I have forgotten that? He was most definitely not flirting with me. I was such a fool. As I was starting to head in to see the play, I heard a man speaking very angrily. I turned to see one of the most famed actors of my time. He seemed to be talking to himself.
"You have to kill him," he muttered as he ran his hand through his jet black curly hair, "...he is ruining the country. You can't back down"! His dark eyes looked menacing. He didn't notice me staring at him and he kept muttering to himself. I wasn't sure if he was practicing for his part or if it was real. I saw a gun in his hand, but it could've been a prop. My gut told me to follow him.
I followed the man carefully. He was no longer talking to himself, he was very silent. He went up some red-carpeted stairs and I crept slowly behind, praying he didn't catch me. It wasn't long before he abruptly stopped near the entrance of a balcony seat. He took a deep breath and I could see he was nervous. He closed his eyes, and with one last breath, he slipped into the balcony seating.
I was right behind him. My heart was beating loudly in my chest. If he turned around, I was done for. He slowly pointed the gun behind a familiarly dark-haired man. I didn't know what to do. I was rather short and not very strong. I prayed the man would change his mind, but I saw his finger on the trigger. His finger slowly pulled and I had no choice but to act. I jumped on the man and tackled him down, but it was too late. The gun had gone off. It all happened so fast that I didn't see where the gun had been aimed. I saw a woman on the floor. A stream of blood was coming from her head.
The actor I had tackled down was still under me. He grunted and I slowly stood up. He didn't even take a second to think as he ran off as fast as he could. I looked over to the woman and saw the man that I was supposed to meet during intermission. His face was wet with tears, his eyes carried such sadness. It was his wife. The play was still in full swing, no one had heard the commotion.
"Mary," he whispered, "you didn't deserve this". I walked over and knelt beside him. I put my hand on his shoulder.
"I'm so sorry. You must have loved her so much." I said. He looked up at me with his sad eyes.
"I did love her so, but not the way you think". He turned his eyes back to the woman on the floor. Her dark brown hair was littered with greys and matted with blood.
"Whatever do you mean?" I asked, taken aback by his response.
"Our marriage was strained. She was distant after so many of our children had died. I still loved her and always will, but she had been distant for so long it didn't seem like we were married. We just lived together" he sighed.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't mean for it to hit her or anyone. I just wanted to save you." I said, tears in my eyes.
"It was not your fault. You saved my life. Mary is in a better place now. Her suffering has ended, I just wish it was more dignified."
"What do we do now?" I whispered as I looked to him.
