I smile because I am selfish.

I am an individual, undeterred by pragmatist pressures. I am influenced by my happiness, guided by it, awoken every morning by the promise of it. I myself crave happiness, fulfillment, realization of my goals. To use my smiles, my happiness, as a means to an end would be to subvert them to some other goal. I can have none of that; No, my happiness must be primary.

I smile because I am selfish.

Every breath that I take is for myself and myself alone. Don't get me wrong, I love my family and my friends and dogs and the occasional chemistry lesson. Oh, I love so many things so indescribably deeply. But the first and foremost of those things is myself. How should a person be expected to be happy and give love if they do not first love themselves? The average person spends more time trying to make others happy than they do thinking about what they truly want from the world. If Make a change in the world, we can make it better for everyone. But that doesn't happen unless you step away and do some work, selfishly and independently.

I live for myself, attached to others, though unattached to their influences. Only I can be me; only I can do as I do. I am not special, but maybe I am daring enough, maybe I am creative enough, maybe I am selfish enough to be different enough to change the world enough. Enough for what? Enough for me.

I have been extraordinarily blessed with an opportunity to do what I want. Am I to give that up for the collective society that wants me to restrict myself? I have goals, and dreams, I have a chance, and god damn it if I am going to be what stops me. I refuse to hate myself, and I refuse to moderate how I live my life. I love my life. It is mine. I ultimately serve nothing but it.

Because I want to live a complete life. Not necessarily a long life, or a successful life, or a comfortable life. And there is nothing comparable to reaching the things that I have dedicated my life towards. My happiness is unobtainable without independence. I could never be happy if I confined myself to a system of self-limitation; Burrowing my head into a hole in the ground may be less asphyxiating than self-limitation, and it would definitely foster less ignorance. Should I give my chance to others who may not believe as dearly as I do, as steadfast as I do? Regardless of whether I should, I'm not going to. Because I want my chance. Because I'm selfish.

I hope that you will understand. I don't mean to advocate selfishness in the way of attempting to cause harm to another. I would never advocate being rude without reason. But I will not submit to the "good of the majority", whatever that means. I get that it's a Core Democratic Value™, but I honestly don't care.
