My fingers wrapped tighter around the thick glass of my soda bottle, tendrils of red hot anger snaked their way through my body. Four men stood around Nova with predatory smiles, their gazes fixed on her curves that were barely hidden by my large black hoodie. A haze of black wrapped around my vision until there was nothing but them surrounding her. Images of blood and bones snapping filled my head with sickening clarity, and I snarled. I snarled so loud that five heads snapped in my direction. Four of them were confused and annoyed at the interruption. The other’s relaxed with relief, blue eyes welling up with tears.
“Get the fuck away from her,” I advanced, my boots thumping against damp pavement.
I didn't wait for an answer or for them to even have the chance to leave before I lunged. I picked the tallest of them, the biggest. One quick snap of my wrist and my bottle cracked against his thick nose with a loud crunch. As he brought his hands up to his face in surprise I drove my knee against his groin and shoved against his shoulders with as much force as I could muster. The man toppled to the ground and I fell with him. I wasn’t done.
Locking his arms to his sides with my knees as I sat on him and grabbed his jaw my fingertips pushing against his skin hard enough to bruise, “fucking pig,” I hissed in his face, bending close enough that my breath fanned across his face.
Thunk.
My fist met his cheek with satisfying force, and I grinned.
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
The man’s large hands encasing Nova’s bicep, hard enough to trap her.
Crunch.
The way he laughed when she tried to tug away.
Crunch.
The sick thoughts you could read on his face as she desperately looked around for help.
Crunch.
His friend’s circling her like hyenas ready for a meal.
Thunk.
I watched his face morph under my fists, blood blossoming from thick gashes left from my rings. I wanted to watch him bleed for hours.
“Enough, love,” a small hand clasped around my shoulder with a gentle but firm order, “I wanna go home.”
My hands dropped and I looked up my vision clearing until the crisp windy parking lot came back into view. My eyes found Nova’s and then fell back onto the body under me. Purple bruises already bloomed on the man’s face, he groaned quietly, his head lulling to the side against the blacktop. I shook my head.
“Let’s go,” Nova pulled me up and led me away from the battered form. Her fingers slipped through mine weaving our shaking hands together, and we ran through the streets as fast as we would. The only sound was the rapid thump of our shoes and our breathing as we tumbled through alleys and through the neighborhood.
It wasn’t until we had cleared at least twenty blocks that Nova pulled us into a small alley that was empty save for us. For second all we could do was breathe into the night and listen for sirens, but I couldn't wait before I lifted pleading eyes to Nova and gulped.
“I'm so sorry, Nova, really. I didn't mean to-” Her lips met mine softly before I could finish. Her kiss tasted like salty tears and cheap orange soda, but her lips warmed against mine. I couldn’t think, all I could do was lift a palm to cup her face two fingers tucking behind her ear. My other hand slid against her waist gently and tugged her closer. She was so warm and fit perfectly against me. I didn’t ever want to let go. I backed her against the nearest wall, pressing her back against the bricks tenderly making sure she knew pushing me away was an option.
I kissed her back sweetly, and something cracked inside when I felt fresh tears slide against the thumb that cradled her jaw. I pulled away.
“Please don’t leave me alone again,” Nova whispered hoarsely, the tip of her nose was rosy pink and her body shook ever so slightly. I bit back a small sob and nodded. Pulling her back against me I held her to my chest, letting black tresses tickle my nose as her face buried into my shoulder.
