There was once an ordinary house with an ordinary yard. In the house there lived a little girl with her parents. One year a great winter has arrived and it has been snowing a lot. The whole yard has been covered by snow.
“Finally, I can build a proper snowman,” said the girl happily with her heart full of joy. And since the girl was very skilled, a big snowman soon grew up in the yard. It was a great snowman indeed and had everything a snowman is supposed to have. Eyes and mouth made of small stones, big nose, kitchen pot as a hat, even an old scarf around his neck and a short twig in his snowmaneese hand. It was already the evening when the little girl was done and the snowman was completed. Dark evening has arrived followed by the night, so the little girl went to bed very quickly. Building a snowman can be really tiring.
But when everybody fell asleep, all of a sudden a sound of sneezing appeared out from nowhere. Atishoo! And again. And again. Atishoo! The sneezing was so noisy that everybody in the house had to wake up. Daddy woke up first and was listening very curiously to the sounds that got him out of the bed. Atishoo! Atishoo! There was no break in the sneezing and it was so loud that even mummy was not able to sleep either. Both parents decided to walk quietly to the girl’s room and have a look at their daughter. Probably she got a cold while building the snowman.
To their surprise the little girl was sleeping peacefully. However, the sneezing seemed to have no end at all. Atishoo! Atishoo! And because of that, the little girl opened her eyes and could not sleep any longer.
All three of them were sitting quietly and listening very carefully to find out more about the strange sudden noise.
“That must be our snowman sneezing!” cried the girl after a while. And so it was. The snowman was sneezing so loudly and strongly that the kitchen pot was dancing on his head. The girl was observing this through the window together with her parents and thinking hard. They were not in the mood to examine the snowman since it was too late, too dark and too cold out there. “Hmmm”, said the daddy thoughtfully, “I thing we are supposed to ring the doctor as a first thing in the morning”.
The next day the doctor has arrived. He dropped his briefcase in the hall, took his long coat off and asked the parents: “Soooo, where is our patient?” And he was looking at the girl thinking that the patient must be her. “There is our patient”, answered the parents and daddy pointed his finger through the window at the snowman. “He had been sneezing all night. He must be cold and pretty sick”.
“Well, well”, said the confused doctor and started to scratching his chin, “I treat people, not snowmen. And each and every snowman is made of snow, after all, therefore is supposed to be hardy. Especially in winter. But since I am here already, I will have a look at him”. The doctor got dressed and walked outside towards the poor snowman. It took him a while but finally he came back with a satisfied smile. “I know the reason of his sneezing” he declared triumphantly. “A proper snowman has its nose made of carrot. But yours, yours has a horseradish instead. And this vegetable is a little bit pungent. It must have been itching him in the nose all night long. So I think that is the mystery behind his sneezing”.
The little girl has confessed that she was not able to find a single carrot in the kitchen, therefore she had to use the horseradish instead. The parents used to buy it from time to time, it is a healthy vegetable indeed, especially during the cold winter. Mother left to the pantry and came back with a beautiful carrot. The girl swapped the noses very quickly. And since then, the snowman has kept his happy smile throughout the whole winter and has never ever sneezed again.
