"I'm going out!" Cardamon shouts, grabbing her scarf, and wrapping it around her neck. The scarf, a lovely item made by her mother on Cardamon's 10th birthday, was a pastel blue, the same color as her eyes. Cardamon's mother looked up from her sewing.
"Be back by dinner," She replies. "And don't-"
"Go near the Fence. I know, Mama," She finished, walking over to her mother, and hugging her. "I'll be fine. You always act like I'm going to climb the Fence and go into the Seams!" Cardamon scowled, pulling her winter hat over her bright pink hair, and left the house.
"Be safe Cardamon!" Her mother shouted after her, the howling wind carrying the sound away. Cardamon continued on in silence, with the crunching of snow underfoot the only sound she could hear.
"Hey, Cardamon!" She stopped the sound of footsteps behind her growing louder. She turned to see another kid, a lanky boy, bundled up, a shock of golden hair peeking out from under his beanie. Cardamon sighed and continued walking towards the Fence.
"W-Wait! I thought your mom didn't want you near the Fence," He murmured, his breath clouding the glasses he wore. Cardamon frowned.
"Yeah. She doesn't. But you aren't going tell on me, are you Lemongrass?" He hesitated and then nodded, and the pair made their way up to the Fence, its large iron spikes reaching into the sky like long metal fingers. 314Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡWV34BbailX
"There it is," Cardamon says, looking up in awe. Beyond the Fence, was the Seams, dark, forested, and dangerous. "The Seams." Lemongrass suddenly runs forward.
"Lemongrass?! Hey, wait up!" Cardamon follows, struggling to run in the knee-deep snow. She came to a stop, standing beside Lemongrass, who was staring at the Fence in shock.
"Is that...a boy?" Cardamon shielded her eyes with a hand, watching the distant figure grow closer, then collaspe.
