I’m sixteen and I’ve just been chosen to lead a team of Scallonians to Earth, more than one hundred thousand lightyears away from Scallanos. All the Scallonians on this space crusade are normal skin colors, so they can blend in with the masses on Earth. The team consists of Constellation, the Navigator; Meteor, the Mechanic-slash-my secret crush-slash cutest Scallonian in the universe; Nova, the Pilot; and Star, the Co-Pilot. I probably looked like I was about to die of happiness when Meteor was chosen. I mean, it’s not every day your crush gets picked to go with you on a top secret mission that could take eons! Anyway, we only have one month of space travel training before we are launched from home in the spacecraft Orion. The next ten days will be spent on getting used to the feeling of weightlessness.
Tonight, I’m staring at the ceiling in my bedroom and wondering what training (or torture) we will be subjected to tomorrow morning. The door creaks open.
“Asteroid?”
“Mom? Is that you?” I say sitting up.
“Yes dear. I wanted to give you something.” She sounds scared.
“I wanted to give you these.” She’s holding up a pair of boots. They are made of leather , but sparkle like iridium. In short, they are beautiful.
“They can give the wearer the power of being invisible and the power of flight, even both at the same time.”
“I’m scared”
She leans down and hugs me. “Good. It shows that you have humanity.
I love you, my Moon,” she says, rising.
